The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the world's most widely recognised certification of Japanese language ability. Administered by The Japan Foundation, it is accepted globally for employment, higher education, immigration, and professional certification in Japan. In New Delhi, the exam is conducted by MOSAI (Monbusho Scholars Association of India) — twice every year, in July and December.

Whether you are a student aiming to study in Japan, a working professional eyeing a career with a Japanese company, or simply a language enthusiast wanting a certified credential, the JLPT July 2026 is your next big milestone. This comprehensive guide brings you every detail you need — from eligibility and fee to the step-by-step application process — and explains how TLS – The Japanese Language School in Laxmi Nagar, New Delhi, can give you the best preparation advantage.

What Is the JLPT?

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test evaluates and certifies the Japanese language proficiency of non-native speakers through standardised assessments covering Language Knowledge(vocabulary and grammar), Reading, and Listening. It does not test speaking or writing. The test is globally recognised — over 1.4 million people attempt it each year across more than 80 countries.

In India, the exam is held at select centres in major cities. The New Delhi centre is managed by MOSAI and offers all five levels every examination cycle.

JLPT Levels: N1 to N5 Explained

The JLPT has five proficiency levels, from the most basic (N5) to the most advanced (N1). Here is a quick overview of what each level demands:

N1

Advanced

Understand Japanese used in a wide variety of complex situations.

N2

Upper Intermediate

Understand Japanese used in everyday situations and a variety of settings.

N3

Intermediate

Bridge level between N4/N5 and N1/N2. Understand everyday Japanese to some extent.

N4

Elementary

Understand basic Japanese mainly learned in a classroom setting.

N5

Beginner

Understand some basic Japanese taught in class — the easiest entry point.

N1 and N2 test comprehension of Japanese used in real, everyday life situations across a broad range of scenes.

N3 acts as a bridge between the basic and advanced levels, assessing language activities like reading and listening in moderately challenging contexts.

N4 and N5 are suitable for learners who are in or have recently completed structured classroom programmes.

Why Is the JLPT Important?

The JLPT certificate is more than a language qualification — it is a passport to a world of opportunities. Here is why thousands of Indian learners pursue it every year:

University Admissions in Japan

Most Japanese universities require at least N2 certification for admission. N1 significantly strengthens your application for top-ranked institutions.

Career with Japanese Companies

Thousands of Japanese MNCs operating in India (and globally) prefer or require JLPT N3–N1 for roles in translation, management, engineering, and customer service.

Japan Work Visa / Immigration

N2 or N1 is often mandatory for Japan’s Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) and other residency visa categories.

Professional Credibility

JLPT is recognized by the Government of Japan and major international corporations as the gold standard of Japanese proficiency.

Structured Learning Milestone

Preparing for each JLPT level gives learners a clear syllabus and measurable goals, making language learning more focused and effective.

Competitive Edge

In a competitive job market, a JLPT certificate on your resume instantly sets you apart from other candidates applying for Japan-related roles.
