What Is the NAT-TEST? A Quick Overview

The Japanese Language NAT-TEST (日本語NAT-TEST) is a proficiency examination designed to measure the Japanese language ability of non-native speakers. It is created, organised, and administered by Senmon Kyouiku Publishing Co., Ltd., and is aligned with the CEFR A2 framework. Unlike the JLPT  which is held only twice a year  the NAT-TEST is conducted almost every month across Asia, making it one of the most accessible Japanese language certifications available.

The test has five levels:

•        1Q — Advanced (equivalent to JLPT N1)

•        2Q — Upper-intermediate (equivalent to JLPT N2)

•        3Q — Intermediate (equivalent to JLPT N3)

•        4Q — Elementary (equivalent to JLPT N4)

•        5Q — Beginner (equivalent to JLPT N5)

The NAT-TEST is widely accepted by Japanese language schools, vocational institutes, and immigration authorities when applying for a Japan student visa or a Specified Skilled Worker visa.

Passing Scores for NAT-TEST (Fixed from December 2023)

Since the December 2023 test, the NAT-TEST no longer uses variable cut-off scores. The passing score is now fixed at every session, making it easier to plan your preparation:

•        1Q: 100 out of 150

•        2Q: 90 out of 150

•        3Q: 95 out of 150

•        4Q: 90 out of 150

•        5Q: 80 out of 150

This fixed scoring system is a significant advantage over older variable cut-offs — you now know your exact target before you even begin studying.

What to Do Next — Whether You Passed or Not

If you passed — congratulations!

•        Download or request your official score certificate for use in visa applications, job applications, or admissions.

•        If you need a formal Institution Score Report for submitting to Japanese schools or immigration authorities, request it through the official NAT-TEST score report page.

•        Plan your next level: if you cleared 5Q, start preparing for 4Q. If you cleared 4Q, target 3Q next — each step opens new opportunities in Japan.

•        Talk to TLS counsellors about your Japan study or work visa options now that you have a qualifying score.

If you did not pass this time

•        Do not be discouraged — the NAT-TEST is held every month, meaning your next opportunity is only weeks away.

•        Request your individual score report from the official website to understand exactly where your marks fell short.

•        Join a structured coaching programme — students who prepare with guided coaching consistently outperform self-study candidates.

•        At TLS, our faculty work with students on exactly the areas where they lose marks: vocabulary, reading comprehension, and listening — all high-weightage sections in every level.

Q7. Is the NAT-TEST accepted for Japan student visa applications?

Q8. Can I prepare for NAT-TEST in Delhi?

Both are Japanese proficiency exams, but they differ in frequency, format, and availability. The NAT-TEST has 5 levels (1Q–5Q) corresponding broadly to JLPT N1–N5. Both are accepted for visa and employment purposes.

Q10. How do I get my official NAT-TEST score certificate?

If you passed, your official result is confirmed by the presence of your examination number on the official results page. For a formal, printable certificate or institution score report (required for visa applications), visit the official NAT-TEST score report request page at nat-test.com or contact your local test centre directly.
